Leaf UpdateSo Nissan has started sending out emails to "request a quote" from your dealer. I got mine this afternoon and jumped! We'll see what Boardwalk Nissan does now ;) (hey Brendan, remember all those kind words I had, would ya?)

"Hi Chris. We have some exciting news. You can now request a quote* from your local Nissan Dealer and place an order for your Nissan LEAF™.

We appreciate your support of Nissan LEAF, and we're happy to say that you'll soon be one step closer to owning one.

To get started, click below."

I priced the car out at just over $35k, and said I was interested in Leasing the car. I figure if I'm ever going to lease a car this will be it. I don't hold on to cars for very long, so a 3 year Lease will actually be pushing it for me, but I'm gonna be a father soon, perhaps it's time to grow up :D

NISSAN LAUNCHES ‘INNOVATION FOR ALL’ BRAND CAMPAIGN TO BUILD ON US MARKET GROWTH

New campaign to feature full line of Nissan vehicles, innovations that drive them

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (Aug. 25, 2010) – Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today announced a significant new marketing initiative to showcase the strength of Nissan’s innovative product portfolio and build on 10 straight months of sales growth for the Nissan brand in the U.S. market. The campaign, to be headlined under the theme “Innovation for All,” will launch on Aug. 28 and permeate a variety of medium and targets over the next several months.

“Innovation for All” will begin with a series of five television spots that capture Nissan’s history, track record and process of innovation. The campaign features the full line of Nissan products – from the 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF and Altima mid-size sedan to the Z sports car, Titan full-size pickup truck and cube ® activity vehicle. The versatile campaign also will appear in print and online with a consistent look and feel.

“Innovation has been the heart and soul of the Nissan brand for nearly 100 years,” said Jon Brancheau, vice president, Marketing, NNA. “‘Innovation for All’ isn’t simply a new marketing idea. It’s the very foundation of Nissan worldwide. This campaign captures Nissan’s spirit and continued drive towards innovation – not just for the elite, but for everyone.”

The campaign, developed by longtime partners TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles, depicts Nissan’s innovation through a series of stories that are in turn whimsical, heartwarming, technology-minded, spirited and poignant. “We’re sharing Nissan stories that are as exciting, intelligent and innovative as the brand itself,” said Rob Schwartz, chief creative officer, TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles.

The first of the “Innovation” ads will debut Aug. 28 during the ESPN College Football Preview Show:

·         “Innovations” – A celebration of Nissan’s current innovations, including smart phone apps, recycled materials, air purifiers, the Juke – the world’s first Sports Cross – and the 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF.

The second set of ad spots, set to air beginning Sept 1, include:

·         “Baby” – A soon-to-be dad transforms his 370Z into a Maxima sports sedan for the arrival of his first child.

·         “Kidzilla” – A little boy’s toy car collection endures a beating, from dog-chewing to water plunges, but the Nissan Altima remains unscathed – just like in the real world.

·         “Dime” – One of the most important safety innovations that Nissan delivers in every new car is its brake override system. This ad shows that a Nissan truly can stop on a dime.

Sept. 9 marks the debut of “Polar Bear,” a highlight of the “Innovation for All” campaign as it previews the Nissan LEAF – the world’s first mass market, affordable zero-emission 100-percent electric vehicle. In this story, a polar bear journeys from the icy Arctic through forests, highways, train tracks and over bridges to the big city and then on to the suburbs, where the animal finds someone who is trying to help – the owner of an all-electric Nissan LEAF.

The “Innovation for All” campaign represents a significant marketing initiative for Nissan, aiming to deliver over 200,000,000 media impressions before the end of 2010.

So have your dealers started calling you to ask what your order date is? I got a call from Boardwalk today. I said very positive things about Brendan, I hope that doesn't come back to burn me ;)

I was told by the GM that there would likely be no test drives before they get a demo vehicle in December, I sure as help hope that isn't true. Nissan has been saying driving tours will happen sometime this fall.

Tried to post this in announcements, but I'm not Chris, so I couldn't. Hopefully enough people find this thread!

There is a Nissan dealer convention in Las Vegas early next week, and since I asked oh so nicely, Boardwalk Nissan is sending me to Vegas to attend. I could care less about the usual BS, but what I'm there for is on Tuesday from 12-4: The LEAF information Expo. Both of the demo cars are supposed to be there (but according to the rep, none to drive... ), and I should have a lot of time to speak with the reps, engineers, et al.

I'd love to go there with a list of questions to ask, and then report back the findings. Fire away, I'll print the thread out, and answer as many questions for you guys as I can while I'm there

Myself and a buddy headed down to Plugin2010's public night down in San Jose this evening. To be honest, there wasn't much to be learned there, though there were a few interesting things to see.

They had the usual blue Leaf that has been around California a few times now (I've tracked it down and photo graphed it twice), though tonight was a little different. There were no red ropes this time, so people could get right up on the car. It was mostly unlocked, but they weren't too happy when people opened the doors (I swear I didn't! but saw a few try). The car was cleaner than when it was out on display in the open as I've seen it before, though had a number of finger prints on it by the end of the night. They also had the various accessory lights on, see some of my photos for those.

Nissan also had a battery pack on display, that was cool to see.
Nissan Leaf Battery Pack IMG_5501

In addition to the Nissan info, there was an AV Charger there on display, I got a number of photos from that.
IMG_2491 IMG_2489
IMG_2488

In addition to the AV charger on display there were a TON of other chargers available. I talked to one of the Coulomb Tech reps for a bit (I think he was a founder of the company) and he seemed to talk like their charging units (mainly the free ones) would only be made available to the GM/Ford/Smart car buyers, not to Nissan Leaf buyers, but we'll see how that plays out. Since they are local I am hoping to reach out to them again soon and see what more info they can provide.

Check out all of the rest of the photos posted from the night

PRESS RELEASE

Nissan Announces National Market Roll-Out Plan for Zero-Emission Nissan LEAF

- More than half of 17,000 reservations located in initial launch markets -

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, nearly 17,000 future Nissan LEAF drivers are learning when the world's first affordable all-electric, zero-emission vehicle will be available in their markets. Consumers who have placed reservations for the Nissan LEAF received a communication today regarding market timing and next steps in ordering the all-electric vehicle.

Nissan LEAF first will be available to consumers in December, in California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Tennessee. These areas are home to The EV Project – the largest electric vehicle and infrastructure deployment ever undertaken. The EV Project is a result of a partnership with charging infrastructure provider ECOtality and partially funded by a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy. Customers in these first five launch states, who represent more than 55 percent of total Nissan LEAF reservations, will be able to place firm orders for the Nissan LEAF starting in August.

Nissan LEAF will be introduced to Texas and Hawaii shortly thereafter, in January 2011; North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina and Alabama follow in April 2011; and be rolled-out to the balance of the nation beginning in Fall 2011 with availability in all markets nationwide by the end of that year.

"We are pleased to see so many people making a choice for a zero-emission future by placing reservations for the Nissan LEAF," said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America. "Consumer feedback and market readiness have been key drivers in developing our phased rollout. Nissan is able to target areas of customer demand for early launch, while continuing to work in future markets to ensure the continued success of electric vehicles."

Nissan North America also is informing its consumers that the lithium-ion battery pack that powers the Nissan LEAF will carry a warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles – matching U.S. market competitive conditions.

Consumers who have reserved the Nissan LEAF online will be invited to place orders through their dealer for the vehicle in advance of market roll-out timing, allowing time for consumers to select a dealer and assess home charging needs. Nissan is continuing to take reservations for the Nissan LEAF through its website, www.NissanUSA.com. Interested consumers are encouraged to place a reservation, which entails a $99 fully refundable fee to secure a spot on the list to place an order.

The reservations process has educated Nissan about more than just geographic distribution. Some information we've learned about future Nissan LEAF drivers includes:

* Favorite color: The favorite color of Nissan LEAF owners is blue. More than 30 percent of reservations are for blue Nissan LEAF electric cars. Silver is a close second, at about 26 percent. The remaining reservations are close to evenly split among red, black and white.
* Trim level: About 75 percent of Nissan LEAF orders are for the SL trim level, which adds a rearview monitor, solar panel spoiler, fog lights, and automatic headlights.
* Home and Parking: About 75 percent of people who placed reservations own a single-family home. About 68 percent have attached garages, while an additional 18 percent have detached garages or carports. Home ownership and dedicated parking are important factors for Nissan LEAF drivers who plan to charge their vehicles at home.
* Purchase time: About 67 percent of Nissan LEAF reservations holders have indicated that they'd be ready to purchase or lease a Nissan LEAF within one year of placing the reservation. An additional 24 percent indicated they would be ready in one to two years.
* Interests: Several primary interests are inspiring people to order a Nissan LEAF. Cited interests include energy independence (35 percent); environmental consciousness (34 percent); and cost/fuel economy (20 percent).

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive design, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. Nissan sent out an online survey asking about warranty and battery life for the Nissan Leaf.

From reading through the survey it looks like they are considering 5yr/60k warranties, or 8yr/100k warranties.

There is definitely a lot of information in the survey, and they ask a lot of "what would it take to make you not buy a Leaf". I was pretty strict on I won't accept a 5yr/60k mile warranty, I have no interest in the risk of being an early adopter of the Nissan Leaf if they aren't going to back the product with a very rigid warranty.

Here are a couple more screenshots from the Survey

What was your overall response to the survey? Did you get it today? Did you fill it out? What do you think the Warranty should be?

It was a great day for future leaf owners down in San Jose. A group of us met up at the LiveStrong Challenge event going on down there today and tomorrow to check out the Nissan Leaf that was on display.

Fun was had by all, though MsLusty is still there trying to find the Tailpipe on the Nissan Leaf.

I got down there around 10am and started testing out the camera on the Leaf. The Setup was similar to what they had at the Amgen Tour Of California back in May, though they tweaked the layout a bit. Lighting wasn't great for photos today, way too much sun on half the car, and none on the other half of the car, but I tried to make due.

Lunch was provided by Brendan from Boardwalk Nissan, a huge thanks to him for that! Word he was able to pass on as well is that Boardwalk will not be marking up the price on the Leaf over MSRP! That's great news for all of us in the Bay Area looking forward to buying from boardwalk.

Nissan Leaf DashboardWith the help of the lunch Brendan provided we managed to talk the reps into opening the Leaf up for us to take some photos of in inside, something that wasn't possible at the Tour of California.

At the end of the day those of us remaining posed for a group shot outside of the car.

Check out all the photos we took at the event, and possibly look for them via some other venues soon!

It looks like the announcement from Coulomb came out today, though they haven't come out and said anything official (from what I can find) about if they will be giving some free chargers out for home use. You can "Request" or suggest a location for their Chargepoint network, I've done it, not sure it will work or not, but worth a shot.

So apparently Coulomb Technologies will be announcing (on Thursday July 8th) that they received a grant to install 1600 charging stations in certain parts of California. I’m not quite clear on if these will be home charging stations or something else, but if they are home stations let me be first on the list!

I’m in the target area, between San Francisco and San Jose! Apparently they will also be available in Sacramento and Los Angeles. If anyone from Coulomb reads this, consider me totally interested. I’ll gladly share all sorts of data! :)

So I had my home charging assessment this afternoon for my Nissan Leaf order. Here's a quick overview of what happened, and what I learned.

I had a local electrician come by, as well as a representative from Aerovironment. I wouldn't expect everyone is going to have an AV rep at their assessment, but because today was the first day they were checking out some of the assessments to see how things can be streamlined.

So the first thing the electrician did was take a picture of the house and address. Then he inspected the box where the electrical meter is located and verified that the overall capacity of the house was fine, ours was with a 100amp (remember I'm no electrician so what I say may be totally wrong). From there he took a picture of the box and meter, then moved into the house to find the sub panel, the circuit breaker for the house. His first thought was that I would have to replace the panel entirely because it is full and old. Fortunately I showed him that we have a 220v hookup for an electric dryer that isn't being used, which means we should be able to pull the 30amp breaker for that and replace it with the required 40amp breaker that the Leaf charger will need.

He looked around the garage, told us where he would suggest installing the charger, and then let me choose where I would like it installed. We talked about the pros/cons of various locations, the main con being the 15' charging cord that will run across the floor when the car is plugged in.

The Aerovironment rep asked me a few questions such as how I thought Nissan was doing with the Leaf as a whole, to which I said I was pleased. He also made notes about items he would follow up with his supervisor on, questions the electrician had about the paperwork he had, as well as some other general things that he thinks might make the overall process smoother.

The last thing that the electrician did was hung up a "sticker" to mark where the Charger would go. He then took a picture of that, I also took my own picture, of course
Assessment mounting location #leaf

So what's next? Well apparently the assessment will be sent to AV once the local electrician fills out all the paperwork. Then they will send me a quote for how much it is going to cost to do the installation. I think it looks to be pretty straightforward for our house, so hopefully it's not a price proposition.

update: Forgot to mention, they told me the installs for the chargers would start occurring in October.
Jul 01, 2010 -1:24 AM

Damn, I should start taking the 101 to work more often, wish I had seen this (not sure when it was taken, but it was very near my house/work!)!

We've got the scoop, hear it here first! Check out the new Nissan Leaf iAd announcement and video!

I must say, after watching this, as a die-hard Android user I have to think maybe a iPhone would work? bah I can't think like that

Nissan and its zero-emission Nissan LEAF are proud to be one of the first brands and the only automotive brand to date to use Apple’s innovative iAd for iPhone.  Just like the iPhone, Nissan LEAF is 100% electric and 100% in demand as the world’s first mass-production, zero-emission car.  iAds will help Nissan continue to reach the early adopters and target customers who have already placed more than 15,000 reservations for the Nissan LEAF, which will be available beginning in December with full mass-market availability by 2012.

The video demonstrates the functionality that the new iAd format - - launching TODAY July 1 by Apple for iPhone - - offers the millions of iPhone users interested in learning more about Zero Emission Mobility and the new Nissan LEAF.

If you like that video, be sure to check out our latest, Lance Armstrong's new Leaf Commercial!

So the Nissan Leaf Charging assessment appointments are starting up next week (as far as we know) and we are interested in hearing from you how things go.

We are having our inspection on 7/1, will be taking pictures and tweeting all the action on @leafowner. We expect to get an estimate in the range of $2k-$3k for the installation, fortunately the breaker is right in the garage on the front wall, and we are hoping that makes things easier and cheaper!

Do you have an earlier appointment? If so let us know, we're love to hear from you when it occurs, as would the rest of the users here on LeafOwner.com. What are you expecting from the appointment?
Jun 16, 2010 5:37 PM
We got a nice surprise from Nissan today about our Nissan Leaf reservation, an email about getting our charger inspection setup! We've scheduled for 7/1/2010!
Did you get the same email? When did you get scheduled for? Did anyone get turned off by the additional $100 charge to set this up?

LeafOwner.com managed to get a nice little mention on AutoBlogGreen today from this post! Read ABG

UPDATE:
Not long after signing up I received two more emails, in the order received

Nissan Leaf Charger Scheduling just a reminder - your home assessment is coming It's time to get ready
Jun 10, 2010 -3:14 AM

So there has been some discussion here on LeafOwner.com about the potential that dealers will try to price gouge when the Leaf comes out. I recently went to visit a local Nissan Dealer, Boardwalk Nissan in Redwood City and will admit I didn't have the best of experiences, they didn't have ANY info on the Leaf at the time, I am hoping that has changed, so I just reached out to a sales guy who contacted me due to the previous sales guy I was dealing with having left.

So here's what I emailed the guy, I'll post back to this thread later when I hear back, assuming I hear back.

NAME REMOVED,

Thanks for the phone call last night. I do have a few questions that I could use your assistance.

I have money down on a Leaf (I paid $99 back on 4/20), I realize they aren't going to be available until December, but was wondering if you had any more info about them?

Here's what I currently know. By the end of this month Nissan will be contacting me to give me more info. Sometime this summer they will send out an electrician to the house to see if installing a charger is possible or not, and to give an estimate of what that cost will be. This fall they are going to be doing some driving promotions where you can test drive a Leaf. This fall those who are interested will work with a dealer to purchase the car. Then sometime starting in December a lucky few who preordered the Leaf will get them delivered, I am hoping because we are in the bay area that I have a good shot at getting one of the first, also because I preregistered very early on.

I am looking for a dealer who is going to sell me a Leaf at or below MSRP, I am not willing to pay a markup cost for this car, and I will find a dealer that will sell me one at a good price, even if I have to tow the car home to do it. I would hope that Boardwalk Nissan can do this, but I have never purchased a car from you guys so I don't know what to expect yet.

I'm a Nissan kind of guy, I have a 350z currently (my second one) and I've owned a 240z and 280z as well. My wife and I were in at Boardwalk looking at Jettas, that was for her as a replacement for the F-250 she drives right now (for that horse trailer we talked about). The Leaf would be my commuter car if I get one.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Have you reached out to a dealer? Had any luck?

So Nissan just sent out an email campaign that will allow you to create your own Leaf intro video, it's just a way for them to get you to spread the Leaf love, but I went ahead and created one anyways!

Here's the shortcut URL to my video http://bit.ly/bRYxBv

If you got the video be sure to reply here with the link to yours! (I was #961)

I must say I saw this coming, but hopefully it won't be the only thing we see for the Leaf in terms of mobile applications. According to Autoblog Green the Leaf will be getting a simple Iphone app that will allow you to tell the car to either warm or cool the interior, as well as check the charging status of your Leaf. While that is cool, autoblog goes a little sarcastic and complains they want to be able to drive the car remotely.

I'll just be happy if Nissan creates an Android application, or releases an SDK! I would love to try my hand at my own Android application for the car if the opportunity ever presents itself. I'll be damned if I'll buy an IPhone :)

Autoblog Green is reporting that Lance Armstrong is going to be getting the first Nissan Leaf, sometime in September.

Lance has likely had a hell of a day, with all the BS from Landis, then getting into a bad wreck during the Amgen Tour Of California and having to head to the hospital. Lance's #ATOC run might be over, but at least he gets a great car come September! Those of us here at LeafOwner.com are definitely going to be jealous when that happens!

It looks like Nissan has sent out some updated emails to select markets. I received mine the morning of 5/17/2010 with the following text

Chris, thank you for reserving a Nissan LEAF™. you live in an area that will be one of the first to start the order process, which begins in August and continues for the next few months. during this time, you'll be notified when to contact your dealer. together, you will confirm your options, and talk about price, trade-ins and any incentives that are available.

Did you get the email as well? Here's a screen shot of what it looked like.
Email From Nissan 5-17-2010

So today my wife and I headed up to Sacramento (110 miles or so from where we live). In case you hadn’t heard there’s this little thing going on in the state this week, called the Amgen Tour Of California, only the largest bicycle race in the United States. While I have attended a bike race or two in the past, and taken quite a few photos at them, the race itself was not the reason we headed up there.

On Friday we received an email that Nissan would be travelling around with the bike race with a Nissan Leaf in tow, setting up at the finish festivals letting the public see the car. Since I registered for the opportunity to purchase a Leaf on 4/20, I’ve been stoked about this whole process, and I just had to see the car in person. So the wife and I hopped into the Project350z and drove up to Sacramento for a few hours.

We got up there, found a decent parking space and headed off to walk around the various vendors trying to track down the Leaf! We ended up seeing all the vendors and finding the Nissan booth last. I spent probably an hour or so there, taking various photos, looking the car over, and talking to various reps who were there. Unfortunately the car was pretty much on lockdown, you could get close to it, but couldn’t open up any of the fun parts! The windows were up on this sunny beautiful day, and unfortunately that caused for some glare problems with trying to take interior pictures. I took 152 photos, but after trying to filter through some of them we’ve uploaded a large number of them.

Hopefully by taking a look at some of these photos you’ll see different things on the Leaf that you might not have seen in other photos that have been published elsewhere.

We didn’t learn too much different from the event, but it was nice to see the car in person. The only major thing I learned was that in addition to the $7500 government tax credit, California residents may be able to get a $5000 tax rebate, as well as the rebates for the charger installation. That could really make the Leaf a no brainer!

Here are some of the photos, though be sure to check out the full listing of photos from the Amgen Tour Of California Stage 1

Interesting news found as I read through the Autoblog Green today (I'm a changed man reading Autoblog Green now, the thought of getting a Leaf has me all sorts of weird).

There was an article from Monday posted there about Eaton developing fast charging systems for both home and commercial use electric vehicles. That strikes me of interest because I have a buddy, one of my former codriver's in the CorvetteZ06.org car, that works for Eaton. I've already sent him an email to see what kind of discount I can get :)

The word from HybridCars.com is that the Nissan Leaf has surpassed 8000 registrations! That's exciting to see! Though I'm curious to see how many of those registrations actually go through and become purchases? How many of those people are just trying to hold a spot in line and sell their opportunity to the highest bidder?

They also link to another article they posted about problems with the registration process that they themselves experienced. I'm glad to see that I didn't experience any of those problems, had I, I may not own this domain name and have things setup for this website. I'm going to keep digging for more Leaf news, if you're up for posting news as well let me know, I can distribute the permissions!

UPDATE: Engadget has also picked up this story now as well, here's their post.
